Bebe Duncan Hodge
Mrs. Bebe Duncan Hodge was born to Napoleon Bonaparte and Connie White Duncan in Omaha, Nebraska on September 15, 1925.
Soon after, her father, graduate of Alcorn College, left work as a Pullman Porter heading South to become school principal. The family returned to Faraday, Louisiana then Fayette, Natchez and Vicksburg,Mississippi to fulfill the mission. Overcoming the tough obstacles and challenges familiar to Southern culture, the strong and charismatic Professor Duncan and his graceful and formidable wife, Connie (Alcorn) successfully lead and educated students with varied circumstances of every age. Bebe recalled clearly and often shared fascinating stories from childhood about the Jim Crow South. Her adopted brother, the late Edgar Duncan, was welcomed into the Duncan family for life during those years.
Bebe migrated from Mississippi to Chicago at thirteen, prior to her parents arrival. She embraced her godmother, Mrs. Carolyn Johnson, and family while attending Englewood High School. Bebe later attended Cortez Peter’s Business College. She was prepared for employment within the Federal Government retiring from Housing and Urban Development.
Married to the late James C. Hodge, Bebe birthed two girls. Her commitment to being a practical, dedicated, diligent mother and grandmother was unyielding.
Family, long-time friends, best cooking tips, tasty food, good stories (Tyler Perry), shopping, laughs, all things ‘loving and beautiful’ has been the fabric of Bebe’s life. Growing up in the African Methodist Episcopal tradition and remaining Methodist near home, personal faith (Romans 8:28) has been her strength.
Her legacy of love and endurance continues through: daughters, Janice, and Judy; grandsons, Harrison, and Joseph; niece, Dorothy; son-in-love, Herman; and her rich tapestry of trusted friends from homeland, school, work and church life.
