Obituary for William Lewis, Sr.

William Sponson Lewis, Sr. (Louie) was born January 18, 1943 in Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. He was the only child of Sponson and Maude Lewis of Collierville, Tennessee.

He began delivering newspapers at an early age; as a teenager he was promoted to manager. He married Karen Lester August 27, 1960 and together they raised 4 sons. William attended Parker High School graduating in June 1961. By the age of 20, William became the owner and manager of his own business, Parkside News Agency, originally located on 69th and Stony Island Ave.

He was a well known and respected business owner in the community. He was outspoken and influential throughout his 43 years in business. William provided many youngsters in the community their first job, mentoring and helping them to develop a strong work ethic that would last a life time. Due to his entrepreneur spirit, William had other business endeavors throughout his career but his love for the newspaper business was his passion.

After exiting the newspaper business, William continued to work; his last position being with PACE transportation. He enjoyed his work and continued to do so until weeks before his passing. William always maintained a deep sense of pride in his work and set a positive example for others.

He departed this life on December 29, 2019 after succumbing to cancer.

He is succeeded by: his four sons, William Jr (Tracey), Bryan, Steven, and Richard; grandchildren, Cari, Robin, William III, Bryan Jr, Brittney, Steven Jr, Jason, Rachel Pugh, and Paul; and great-grandson, Sterling.
