Obituary for William C. Miller

William Charles Miller, affectionately known by his family as “Pookie” or “Chill”, was born on January 4, 1960, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Lee William Miller and Lue Virgia Miller. He was the last born of four children. William was preceded in death by his father and his sister Mattie. William departed this life on Sunday June 9, 2019, after a lengthy hospital stay.

William accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Sure Foundation Church. He later joined Christian Fellowship in Christ Church, where Rev. Amos Malone was Pastor. William sang in the choir along with his sisters and cousins Romel and Tyrone. The three cousins grew up together and were known for getting into mischief after church.

William attended Bennett Elementary school and Corliss and Julian High schools. After leaving high school, William moved to Evanston Illinois, and began working for the Orrington Hotel. There, William learned to cook and became a Food Service Manager. This was the beginning of a long and varied working career. William worked for the Orrington Hotel for many years. After the Orrington closed, William relocated to Maryland, where his sisters Annette and Bonnie lived.

He held many positions during his time in Maryland. But William was an outdoorsman at heart and he liked working with his hands, something he learned from this grandpa Gene during summer vacations in Mississippi. He ended up working with a roofing and construction company, where he learned the construction trade. William was industrious and always wanted his own business so he started doing small construction projects on the side. He didn’t charge a lot for his services, because he loved people and he always wanted to help others.

William lived in Maryland for over 20 years before returning to Chicago in 2008. With the skills that he learned in Maryland, William purchased a truck that he called “Blue” and started his own handyman business. After his sister Mattie passed in 2010, he began taking care of his Mother as well.

William was a caring and compassionate person. He was very neat, very organized and a great cook. He cooked the best spare ribs and Crab legs anywhere. William worked his business, took care of his Mom and his puppy Pebbles until failing health prevented him from doing so. William lived a full life; he met a lot of people, made a lot of friends and helped a lot of people along the way.

He is survived by: a devoted mother, Lue Miller; sisters, Bonnynet Johnson, and Annette Miller; brother-in-law, Jonathan Johnson; nephews, Casey Johnson and Joseph Hurst; niece, Jala Lanier; great nieces, Jaylen, and Jayce Johnson; special cousins, Richard Harris, and Archie McKinley; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
