Obituary for Shirley Ann Nelson

he Life of
Shirley Ann Nelson

Shirley Ann Nelson was born on May, 13, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois. She was the fourth of seven children born to Arthur and Mary Nelson. Her father and sister Audrey both preceded her in death.

Shirley attended Calumet High School and continued her education at Kennedy King College, both in Chicago, Illinois. She worked ten years as a CNA prior to becoming a Chicago Police Officer in 1991 where she retired in 2016 after twenty-five years of service. Shirley was well liked and respected by both her fellow officers and the community she served.

In 1976, Shirley met her childhood sweetheart, Charles Williams. To that union her only child, LaShawn, was born. Shawnie, as she is affectionately called, was the apple of her mother’s eye and the driving force behind Shirley’s remarkable strength and determination. In 2015, Shawnie gave her mother the greatest gift when she made her a grandmother to Laila, Mama’s “Honey Bun”.

Shirley exuded beauty, both inside and out. She was a classy, fun-loving woman who stayed fancy and fabulous no matter the occasion. Shirley enjoyed life and wanted those around her to do the same.

As the primary caregiver to her mother for nearly ten years, Shirley was the true definition of a selfless provider. Her family and friends could always count on her and many times she did not have to be asked. A spirit as genuine and beautiful as Shirley’s is rare and will be greatly missed.

We are devastated to lose her in the physical, but there’s no one more deserving of eternal life and peace.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Mary Nelson; daughter, LaShawn (Larenzo) Bell; granddaughter, Laila Bell; four sisters, Chandra (Larry) Jackson, Sharon (Khaled) Mujtabaa, Arleen Nelson, and Clarissa Nelson; brother, Arthur (Sheila) Nelson Jr.; her dear friend, “Sis.” Tandria Robinson; and a host of other relatives; and friends too numerous to name.
