Obituary for Samuel William Mitchell Jr.

Samuel William Mitchell Jr. was the youngest and only male born to Samuel William Mitchell Sr. and Bessie Harris Mitchell on July 15th, 1947 in Chicago, IL. Sammy Jr., as he was affectionately called in his childhood years, was always leading the charge with his friends. Growing up on the west side of Chicago’s famous “K” Town, Sam was known as a leader. As a young man who was not only proud of who he was as a person. He stood up for people who couldn’t stand up for themselves. It was common for him to be a voice of reason at a young age. This was a foreshadowing to a life of serving others in the same way. In 1963, one of his most prized moments was receiving the Award of Excellence from Colonel Oscar Mall during his ROTC years at Calumet High School. In 1973, Sam became a proud SALUKI graduate of Southern Illinois University earning a B.S. degree in Administration of Criminal Justice. Additionally, he completed one year of Law School at DePaul University in 1976. Sam was previously married to Mary Johnson which his daughter Alicia Michelle Mitchell was born during their union. He started his law enforcement career directly after college in 1974 with the Cook County Public Defenders Office as a Criminal Investigator. He was then hired at the Attorney General’s office as a Special Investigator where he worked for over 15 years. During that time he was promoted to Acting Deputy Director of Investigations. Sam received recognition of several accolades and awards for his stellar work as well as his work ethic throughout his 40 year career. In early 1978, Sam met a beautiful young woman named Loretta DeCarol Mitchell. After a brief courtship, they married in their living room on December 30th, 1978. From that day until the day of his death, Loretta, or as he affectionately called her “Breezy”, was right by his side. Their union resulted in one child, Lynnette Lorain Mitchell. After approximately 40 years in law enforcement, at the young age of 55, Sam retired in 2002. He retired as the District Supervisor of Adult Parole. He fulfilled his dream of buying a home in the suburbs, where he resided with his lovely wife Loretta. His retirement was not the end of his law enforcement career. In 2011, he graduated from the South Holland Police Academy where he enjoyed getting involved in his new community. In 2014, Sam became an author writing his first book entitled “His Grace and His Mercy” which chronicled a lifetime of God’s blessings on his life. This 14 chapter book was meant to uplift people to show what God did for him and what God would do for others. Self written and published, Sam didn’t charge for his book. He only wanted to give them away to people that he met along life’s journey. He would carry stacks of them with him at all times and give them out to friends, family and even strangers. Anyone that knew Sam knew how much he loved playing cards. Not any type of cards, but especially Bid Whist. Throughout the years he won a number of prizes and trophies for playing “whist” and tried at every attempt to teach it to anyone who would listen. God called Sam back to His kingdom on Friday October 5th, 2018 at 6:18 pm. Sam was preceded in death by his parents Bessie Harris Mitchell and Samuel William Mitchell Sr., two siblings, Edna Lee Stewart and Alex Mitchell and a son Samuel Mitchell III. His surviving siblings are Judge Judy I. Mitchell-Davis and Alice McCommon, both of Chicago, IL. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his beloved wife Loretta Mitchell and their daughter Lynnette Williams (Dr. Joseph Williams) ; daughter Kimberly Moon; daughter Stephanie Moore (Alfred Moore); daughter Nicole Brookens (Cornelious Brookens) and daughter Alicia Mitchell. Additionally, he leaves to cherish 12 grandchildren; Kai, Mikayla, Mackenzie and Sammy Moon (Kimberly); Tiffani, Taylor and Taniya Moore (Stephanie); Christian and Cailyn Brookens (Nicole); Eric Mitchell and Latroya Martin (Alicia), Skylar Williams (Lynnette); and one great grandson Eric “EJ” Mitchell (Eric)
