Orguerete C. Eskridge Obituary

Orguerete Almetha Columbus was born on August 29, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana to
the late Edward C. Columbus and Juanita A. Columbus. She was called home into the glorious Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 30, 2019.
Sister Eskridge was the first of two children. She accepted Christ at an early age at the
New Hope Baptist Church, which later became Ephesian Baptist Church of New Orleans, LA.
Sister Eskridge graduated from Booker T. Washington Senior High School and from
Southern University at Baton Rouge where she received her Bachelor’s degree. She later received her Master’s degree from Chicago State University with 30 additional hours towards a PhD. She was a certified Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education teacher for over 40 years.
Sister Eskridge was the loving wife of the late Sonny Eskridge. She mothered many
children including her beloved nephew/godson Willie E. Bradford III; Kim, Darryl and the late
Kevin Reed; and her late goddaughter Roselind Murdock.
Sister Eskridge committed her life to serving God as a member of her beloved church,
Trinity United Church of Christ. She faithfully served as an active member of the Women’s
Chorus, Food Share ministry and Active Seniors. She especially enjoyed participating in activities with the Red Hatters.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her sister Lorraine C. Bradford; one nephew Willie
Bradford III (Idorenyin); two great-nieces, Jalyn and Alyssa Bradford; ten great-cousins:
Cynthia Jackson (Gregory), Karen R. Dillon (Matt), Arlene R. Blair (Tracy), Darlene Richardson and Lillie Wallace (Norman); Arthur III (Stacy), Anthony (Patricia), Oscar (Jeanette), Leon (Veronica), and Joseph Richardson. She also leaves her first husband, Leroy Lockett; devoted adopted sisters” Edwina Thomas (Al), Cora Harris, Doris Reed (Willie), and Bertha King; her “adopted niece” Sandradee Gray-Werts; and a host of other family and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father Juanita and Edward Columbus;
husband Sonny Eskridge; aunts Sarah Columbus and Mildred Singleton; uncles James W.
Wallace, James Arthur Alexander and Walter Alexander, Jr; cousins she was raised with,
Marguerite W. Richardson and Ira Wallace.
Sister Eskridge was the joy of her family. She enjoyed watching sports, particularly the
New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears and the Bulls. She traveled extensively through six
continents and often shared stories of her adventures with family and friends. The wisdom,
humor, and most of all, love of God that she shared will be deeply missed.
