Obituary for Joan Sai-Von Lewis

Joan Sai-Von Lewis (née McGill) was a faithful Christian, devoted wife, loving mother and selfless sister and friend.

Born on December 25th, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, Joan was the second of three daughters born to the union of John and Eliza McGill. Both of whom preceded her in death.

From a very young age, Joan had a vibrant personality and was loved by everyone she touched. She was often teased by her sisters for being everyone’s favorite, and that was ok, because she was indeed The Favorite. She developed a love and reverence for God as a young girl and was deeply rooted in her church, where she served on the Usher Board and various other ministries throughout her youth. Her favorite hobby was singing in the choir, and her superior vocal ability led her to obtain a voice scholarship to Jarvis Christian College.

Joan received her high school diploma from John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, NY and later matriculated to Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas, where she met the love of her life, Bert Lewis. She also attended Berkeley College in New York, NY, Saint Xavier University in Chicago, IL, where she earned her Master’s degree, and The New School of Massage, where she learned and mastered the art of Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, sports and shiatsu massage and earned her professional certification.

On September 18th, 1994 Joan married Bert Lewis, with whom she shared 18 years of matrimony before he preceded her in death in 2012. Their union welcomed the love of three sons, Donovan, Patrick and Heath Lewis. Following their union, she relocated to Chicago, Illinois where she held positions with Deloitte and Touche and Oil Dri Corporation of America. Midcareer, she identified a newfound passion for massage therapy and worked as a staff member at Oxygen Spa Studio and as a freelance massage therapist for several clients and organizations.

Joan was a vivacious force who will always be remembered for her humor and candor. She was a fantastic cook, impeccable dresser, avid learner, adventurous traveler and talented singer who provided background vocals for the likes of Yolanda Adams and Chance the Rapper. Joan was also an ambitious and assertive woman who always spoke her mind and was never afraid to let her voice be heard.

She departed this life on Friday, February 28th, 2020.

Joan leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Donovan and Patrick of Blue Island, IL and Heath of Chicago, IL; two sisters Vanessa (Yassin) Mohamed of Brooklyn, NY and Connie (Erwin) Telesfort of Poughquhe, NY; two nephews Jared Mohamed of Brooklyn, NY and Tristan Telesfort of Poughquhe, NY; one niece Tylar Telesfort of Poughquhe, NY and one grand-niece Eliza Mohamed of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of family and friends.
